Apple Pie Luang Prabang, Laos

The search for the perfect apple pie continues.

Between 1893 to 1953 Laos was under French rule, Laos history would indicate towards hopes of discovering delicacies reminiscence of the French empire. Luang Prabang with its French styled bakeries provided us the opportunity to sample these delicacies, but would we find the perfect apple pie?

Our first sampling was done at one of our favorite restaurants "Croissant D'Or".

This wasn't so much apple-pie but more apple-crumble. To my dismay the crumble didn't really impress, being more of a mixed fruit pie. No extra points for adding more fruit. My taste buds were not really stimulated. FAIL!

Our first test didn't really work out, we were dedicated to the cause and continued along the street to find our next test subject. We located a Cafe called "Pilgrims Cafe". Again we were disappointed to find they only had apple sponge. This happened to be very sweet and lacking in apple tastiness. The sponge was very moist and dominant with the essence of cinnamon. Would have been nice with less sugar and maybe some vanilla sauce.

This was enough pie for one night, the following day we made one last ditch attempt to locate a pie worthy of praise.

We found an established bakery simply named "Luang Prabang Bakery and Guest House". The aesthetics of the pie looked promising, with enthusiasm we ordered, ready to enjoy with our morning coffee.

This apple pie had everything going for it in the looks department, pastry maybe a little thick but hey I can dig this, lots of apple fruit spilling out and cinnamon.

Sadly though the same mistake had been repeated, way too sweet. Less if definitely more. Our initial observations were correct, the pastry was way too thick and overpowering the fruit, leading itself into another disappointing review. This was the best of the three pies we tried, however for a connoisseur of pies this simply was not at a high enough standard. To finish on a more positive note, the coffee in Loas is one of my favorite, with or without apple pie.
